Lagos SUBEB holds SMASE Initiative Day, rewards

In a landmark event organized by the BEQA Department, the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) successfully launched its inaugural Strengthening Mathematics and Science Education (SMASE) Initiative Day. Spearheaded by the esteemed Permanent Board Member, Honourable Owolabi Jamiu Falana, the event held December 12, 2023, at the bustling Lagos SUBEB Multipurpose Hall in Maryland marked the commencement of an annual celebration geared towards enhancing education in the region.

Chaired under the representation of the esteemed Executive Chairman of Lagos SUBEB, Dr. Hakeem Babatunde Shittu, by the dexterous Permanent Board Member in Charge of Special Projects, Honourable Bayo Adefuye, the program encapsulated multifaceted objectives and left an indelible mark on its attendees.

The event aimed to sensitize a diverse audience of over 200, ranging from political figures, government representatives, parents, educators, and stakeholders in basic education. The focus was to shed light on the historical underpinnings and achievements of SMASE, particularly in Nigeria and Lagos. This included an emphasis on an annual capacity-building program for 813 teachers, designed to bolster effective lesson planning, utilize cost-effective instructional materials, employ proven teaching methodologies, and implement the ASEI PDSI Lesson Plan, all pivotal in achieving desired learning outcomes in Science and Mathematics.

Showcasing Excellence and Nurturing Talent

The occasion also witnessed a vibrant display of cultural prowess by Lagos State Public Primary School learners, accentuating the far-reaching impacts of interventions undertaken during Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s administration on public primary education.

Moreover, the exhibition showcased an array of Science and Mathematics projects from various schools and Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs), a testament to the creativity and innovation thriving among young learners.

The quiz competition was a cornerstone of the event, fostering healthy academic rivalry among pupils from different LGEAs. Miss. Awodeji Semilogo of St. Saviour Anglican Primary School, Ikorodu LGEA emerged as the winner, with Miss. Jubril Zaynab of Lagos State Model Primary School, Ikeja LGEA securing the second position, and Master Njoku Michael of St. Paul Catholic Primary School, Lagos Mainland clinching the third spot. All participants were duly acknowledged and rewarded for their participation, with the top three achievers receiving plaques and various prizes.

Towards a Brighter Future

Looking ahead, organizers aim to amplify the impact of this initiative in the forthcoming editions. The focus will be on expanding the scope of the SMASE Initiative Day to attract a wider array of participants, activities, and the involvement of private organizations and philanthropists. The goal is to create an event that transcends boundaries, fostering greater educational advancement and community engagement.
